Jimmy Crosby grew up dreaming of becoming a Navy SEAL. He joined the service at 17 and applied for the SEALS as soon as he was eligible. Unfortunately a medical exam discovered a minor asthmatic condition which automatically disqualified him from combat diving. The Navy, however, still expected him to fill a slot in his desired specialty, demolitions. There was no way he was going to be one of those idiots that picks up unexploded mines or torpedoes. So he went AWOL and joined Cobra.

Cobra promised to not only cure his condition but that he would be part of the highly select Hydro-Vipers. What they didn't tell him and what he didn't find out until he awoke from the surgery was that the Hydro-Vipers have many aquatic enhancements surgically implanted. He came to terms with these because they did in fact help him swim better. However, when he "volunteered" for the Venomization program and they wanted to make him into a shark-man he bolted. Technically, he swamÉfrom Cobra Island to Mississippi where Cobra would lose his trail. When he was sure he was safe he contacted the FBI and offered his knowledge for witness protection. His bad luck continued when he was assigned to the newly formed Renegades.

He says he hates being with the Renegades. Says he hates the other Renegades staring at his alterations. Says he hates following orders from some, "Viper cannon fodder no never was". Yet he carries out his duties like a perfect soldier. He likes to act like the world hates him for giving him such a crummy life, but in reality he is happier than ever. He has finally found a place where he fits in doing a job he's always dreamed of doing. Not to mention the fact that he gets a little retribution at Cobra's expense for some of the testing they put him through.
